Join us on Sunday, September 20, for a unique and limited-time exhibition at Forest Lawn Museum in Glendale. We will begin our visit in the Hall of Crucifixion – Resurrection, adjacent to the Museum. There will be a 20-minute presentation and then we move on to the Museum. There we will experience a special exhibit paying tribute to two influential figures with lasting influences in Southern California – Walt Disney and Dr. Hubert, Eaton, founder and inspiration for Forest Lawn Memorial Parks.
Some history, Forest Lawn Museum opened in 1952, but an extensive art collection predates the Museum by nearly 40 years. Forest Lawn Memorial Park began collecting art in 1915. The collection grew rapidly and by the 1940s, Forest Lawn opened the Hall of American Sculpture. The Hall of Crucifixion – Resurrection opened atop Mount Forest Lawn in 1951, a purpose-built structure designed to house The Crucifixion, a 195-foot-wide painting by Polish artist Jan Styka.
More history, Styka’s monumental panorama was painted between 1894 and 1896. It was viewed around Europe until 1904, when it was shipped to St. Louis for the Louisiana Purchase Exposition – the World’s Fair. Unfortunately, there was no space large enough to display the painting and it ended up in Chicago, eventually being wrapped around a telephone pole and left in a warehouse.
In 1944 it was rediscovered in a storage space owned by the Chicago Civic Light Opera Company, after which it was bought by Dr. Hubert Eaton and Forest Lawn.
Our tour should conclude at approx 11:30 a.m., after which we will drive to The Smokehouse for brunch.
